Doing What You Love

I was visiting a private hospital a few weeks ago for their quarterly review.  The owner of the business is a surgeon who loves his work.  Unfortunately, he was very frustrated at the fact that he was spending much of his time managing his business instead of performing surgery.  His executive team was not focused and there was no clear set of guiding principles to help them lead.  That’s when he contacted me to help him develop a functional leadership team.

The Journey To The Next Level leadership management system is designed to help leadership teams take their business to the next level.  The Accountability Chart and People Analyzer are implemented to ensure that the organizational structure is right for the business, roles and responsibilities are clearly identified within that structure and the right people are in the right seats.  Implementing a proven set of tools and processes gets the entire leadership team aligned with everyone rowing in the same direction and the chain of command is clearly delineated.

As the vision of the company is developed during the Vision Building sessions, the foundational tools begin to kick in and traction takes over to achieve that vision.  Quarterly goals are established and a weekly scorecard is developed to motivate the leadership team to set and meet their weekly targets.  The most important aspect of the process is the ability of the leadership team to learn how to identify and solve the most difficult issues facing the company.

At the beginning of every strategic planning session, my first questions are always:

What’s working

What’s not

When the owner’s turn came to respond, he stated that he was thrilled with the progress of his leadership team because he had not had to deal with any management issues for the past three months, he had been able to devote his full time to surgery, which he loved and this was the best use of his time for the benefit and profitability of the hospital.  My next question to him was “are you happy with the decisions being made by the leadership team.”  He indicated that he absolutely was.  He was elated at how well his team had jelled in such a short time.

This is one of the best endorsements he could give and a great compliment to his leadership team and the tools that were implemented.  By delegating, he had elevated himself to his highest level of contribution to the facility.  He was able to do what he loved to do and he had full confidence that his leadership team was leading his company in the right direction.  That’s hard to beat.
